Daily preventive care, including proper brushing, flossing and rinsing will help stop problems before they develop. This is also much less painful, expensive and worrisome than treating certain oral conditions. Remember, if your gums hurt or bleed while brushing or flossing, or you are experiencing persistent bad breath, see your dentist.

How to keep your mouth healthy

In between regular visits to the dentist, there are simple steps that you can take to decrease the risk of developing tooth decay, gum disease and other dental problem:

  • Always use dental products that contain fluoride, including toothpaste;
  • Brush thoroughly, twice a day, and floss daily;
  • Rinse with a fluoride mouth rinse, if recommended by your dentist;
  • Eat a balanced diet and limit sugary snacks and drinks between meals;
  • Make sure your children under 12 years of age drink fluoridated water or take a fluoride supplement if you live in a non-fluoridated area.
